Trinidad

Trinidad, the most southerly of the Caribbean islands, is the perfect travel destination this time of year. While its winter in America, it is dry season in Trinidad. The weather averages 85 degrees with the cooling Trade Winds to make it perfect in the shade.

They are celebrating Carnival (a Mardi Gras type festival) in Trinidad right now. The whole island is in party mode. The natives are particularly friendly this time of year. Plus there is the bonus of being able to hear music played on the only instrument invented in the 20th century, the steel pan. They are also holding their annual calypso contest. Calypso is a topical Caribbean song set to a samba-like beat.

Carnival is also a time when people dress in wildly innovative, multicolored costumes and compete for prizes. You can go to the masquerade 'tents' where the costumes are being made and try one on. You might find yourself in a band and part of the celebration. It is an experience you will never forget.

Trinidad is also a perfect place if you just want to relax. There are spectacular beaches all over the island. Maracas, Las Cuevas, Blanchiechez, Carenage, Macarepe, the choices are endless. The island is also home to an amazing array of birds. The bird santuary is not to be missed. There are also mud volcanoes and one of the wonders of the modern world, the Asphalt Lake at La Brea.

If you want to get even further away from the maddening crowd, the vacation island of Tobago is a few miles off Trinidad's northeast coast. It has some of the most beautiful coral reefs and the breathtaking Nylon Pool. This natural wonder features clear, cool waters and fish with the most startling combination of colors you will ever see. It is a natural paradise.
